High School Course Requirements

Applicants should have at least 16 Carnegie Units of college preparatory course work in high school that includes some combination of the following (in order of importance):

  • Four years of English
While courses like speech and other English electives are interesting, we recommend those be taken in addition to (not as replacements for) English courses with a strong emphasis on writing and reading of literature.
  • Two to three years of modern language
We require a minimum of two, but highly recommend that applicants pursue as many years of language as possible.
  • Three to four years of theoretical mathematics
  • Three to four years of science including at least 2 lab sciences
  • Three to four years of history & social sciences

We recommend that you challenge yourself at the highest level of the coursework suitable to your abilities. The number of honors level and Advanced Placement courses that are in a student’s background are considered in the decision-making process.

Home School Requirements
If you have been home schooled, you must submit the following:

  • Transcript of high school course work
  • Annual testing information as required by the state in which you reside
  • SAT or ACT test scores
  • Transcript of any college-level course work

We also recommend that you submit syllabi and reading lists for each year of high school, as we want to see that you have studied the necessary high school graduation requirements.  We often rely more heavily on standardized test scores when reviewing applications from home schooled students.

If you would like to submit copies of your academic work or curriculum, we will take them into consideration. Home schooled students often submit a detailed extracurricular resume that further adds dimensions to their personality and character. Although you may not be closely associated with your local high school, we still value applicants who have taken the initiative to be active in their local community in varying capacities.
