Courses & Registration

One of our most frequently asked questions regarding registration is, "Can I take a class if I haven't applied to a program?" The answer is, "Yes!" In fact, many of our students take one or even two classes before they apply.

Should you need help with deciding what course is appropriate for you to take, you can meet with one of our academic advisors in the program of your choice. If at any time you are unsure or cannot find what you need, e-mail us at gradprograms@smcvt.edu

Current students may also wish to meet with the appropriate program director or faculty advisor before registering. All course changes, withdrawals, special arrangements and program termination must be approved by the appropriate program director.

Student Status
Graduate students are classified in one of the categories listed below:

  • An auditor is a student who receives no credit, but must complete the normal registration procedures.
  • A non-degree student is one who is registered for credit, but is not formally admitted to a degree program. Students must apply for admission and be accepted prior to or upon completion of six credit hours or risk not having additional credits applied toward the degree.
  • A degree student is one who has been formally admitted to a program of study through the application process.
  • A certificate student is admitted on either a pre-degree or post-degree level. Information on the certification program is available in the program area descriptions.
